An International Driving Permit is worth carrying but isn’t always the deciding factor; it’s the underlying license and how long it’s been held that matters most.

What to actually bring

Your license, a matching photo ID (a passport covers this for most international visitors), and a major credit card in the renter’s name for the deposit. If your license isn’t in English, having an International Driving Permit alongside it makes the delivery process faster — it’s a translation, not a separate qualification.

Insurance for visitors

Most international visitors won’t have a US auto policy that extends to a rental, which usually means the supplemental protection arranged at booking is the simpler path. The age requirement doesn’t change
